Who am i?
James Lewis Tucker holds a BFA in Printmaking from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. In 2013, he founded The Aesthetic Union, a letterpress print shop and gallery in San Francisco’s Mission District that quickly became a vital hub for art, collaboration, and the city’s creative community. Tucker’s work, which has long traversed the realms of printmaking, design, and poetry, was deeply intertwined with the cultural fabric of San Francisco for over a decade. In 2023, after selling the shop to his former employees, he relocated to Sonoma County, where he continues to pursue his artistic practice. In addition to leading mindfulness workshops and Zen meditation groups, Tucker teaches letterpress workshops at North Bay Letterpress Arts, where he also serves on the board. He is renowned for his extensive catalog of woodblock print landscapes and his published poetry books, further solidifying his dual practice as an artist and writer.

While I love letterpress printing, it’s not all that I do. I’m also a well versed designer and educator. I also have and can do other things, but I’m not sure if I’d like to be a tall ship sailor again.

While I did sell The Aesthetic Union, the letterpress studio and gallery I founded in SF in 2013, after 10 years, and studied Zen Buddhism for a little bit, I did not hang up my art, design, and craft hat. I’m very much interested and perhaps a little more experienced in the world of design after being exposed to some new ideas about aesthetics and nonbeing.
